SHAKE THE HIDDEN HAND

The human experience of the supernatural began when we were faced with the peculiarities of the everyday natural world. Pre organised religion, a sky full of glowing green auroras or a pareidolic representation in a rock face, was enough to invoke a great spirit in anyone. 

In searching for explanations of these feelings of wonder and awe our predecessors created our earliest pagan and magical traditions. They lived in a romantic’s paradise-lost where metaphysical dreaming stood along other accepted wisdom as possibility, not fantasy.

CONSTRUCTIVE BOTANICS

GARTH HENDERSON

A progression from the original notions of botanical studies for scientific and cultural investigation, these works explore a complex contemporary re-construction of the vegetative as architecture. Abstracting and hybridising, scaling up and stripping of some recognisable attributes, each of these specimens becomes a grand monument to the notion of engineering, genetic diversity, and the mathematics of nature.

THE HIDEOUT

'It was so surprising to me that no one else had noticed the hideout before I had discovered it, so many people had walked by that morning, on their way to work and school. 

What first caught my eye was the bright red of the pencil, which was extremely sharp and pointing right at me, it was then I suddenly realized it was being held by a tiny archer in a hand made bow...'

VIOLENCE AND HYGIENE

Violence and hygiene are two opposing motifs that serve as an antithesis to each other and also a co-habitating consequence of environments. In the clinical and the primitive, the logical and the instinctive, these ideas serve as an artistic exercise to discuss the frail nature of both in our minds. We have concentrated on this parallel existence of ideas to warp and focus attention.

All people understand fear.

Fear is the oldest and strongest emotion we have. It is a basic survival mechanism that responds to the possibility of pain or the threat of danger. 

Fear sees all things in the dark; all things underground, all the dangers concealed, and because of this, fear builds our fires to ward off the night.

This is an open ended and subtle body of works that explore modern day anxiety, old fashioned menace, the unknown faceless horrors and sinister humour to address collective fears and personal experiences.

To borrow from C.S.Elliot, ‘…the lunatic cannot put out the sun by scrawling the word ‘darkness’ on his cell wall.’ In the same way, these artists cannot put out the fire of fear by creating the darkness within their works.
