I am intrigued by the idea of deconstructing experience, particularly in relation to our understanding of the human body and its representation as the ultimate physical and metaphysical boundary. Quantum science especially, is a crucial driver in my work as it pushes us to completely re-question our perspective about the physical make-up of our universe. Similarly, Eastern philosophies, including the Japanese 'Ma' concept of space as fundamentally void, has also influenced my practice quite significantly.

I aim to encourage a kind of un-learning, a collapsing of order and rationality so that we can let go and concede to an oneiric version of things. The whole installation is re-constituted as one would a fossil, trying to re-piece history into a coherent form, despite the fact there is none. The process and development of the work is a creative exercise that aims to materialise the instinctive understanding of feeling in pure form.

For this project I will create an installation of figurative sculptures using ceramic. The idea will to be to blur lines of identity through hybridising forms and changing ideas of function. I hope to open up questions of how we perceive ourselves and how we see outside ourselves in contemporary society.

Currently living and working in Melbourne my art practice incorporates sculpture, painting and drawing.

In addition to my solo practice I have recently begun working collaboratively with Rhys Lee.

EDMUND THE OLD HOUSE

An immersive installation using illusory devices such as projection, lighting, and visual deception, Edmund the old house will come to life with ghosts, doves in the roof, mould and water dripping.

Visitors will have the opportunity to inhabit this celebration of decay and history.

Footage of ghosts will be screened/projected outside the house and in.

Peepholes in the roof will reveal doves roosting.

Shadows will creep across the walls; potatoes will grow in the front yard.

The installation will be a time-machine transporting the viewer to the Victorian era, where ‘something happened’ in the front room. Ghosts will flicker across the room, the sounds of doves, bats, rain on the roof and water dripping will be heard.

Small models of Edmund the house will fly out of the window. Viewers will see the same house they currently inhabit, as they peer out the windows.

In this March of 2011, Japan went through the catastrophe.

My hometown, Fukushima, also had calamity of the tsunami and it’s consequences.

This event affected me, making me feel totally scared and powerless as I was in Australia and could only watch the news.

Many people lost their family, friends, house, job, food etc… but they didn’t give in at all.

When I saw them, I remembered my grandparents and with it I remembered some pictures I naively took for them and then I thought they were probably the best pictures I have ever taken.

For some reason, the daily life of my grandparents always aroused my curiosity and every time I captured their life with my camera, I ran to the photo studio to develop my pictures and then wait impatiently until the photos were finished.

My grandparents experienced the Second World War calamity, didn’t have foods and clothing.

But they never gave their life in. but also they were always strong, cheerful life. The pictures I took were able to capture those virtues and I don’t know if it was because of them, maybe it was because of me, or maybe just the fact that I loved them so much.

That’s why I couldn’t stop taking pictures of them.

I have taken pictures of them more than 10 years and I would like to take their pictures more, but unfortunately they passed away last year. Their pictures give me inspiration to live happily and cheerful, even in the hard times. Hopefully these pictures can cheer up whoever sees them.

Our ancestors, the neanderthals, hunted only what they needed to surviveand made productive use of what remained. With bone, skin, sinew and plantmaterials, they created objects of both practical and symbolic worth. Thislogic seems entirely alien to our contemporary existence, as the sheerabundance of human waste now threatens to eradicate us altogether.

Kevina-Jo Smith’s work emerges from her almost obsessive collection andreuse of waste materials. Plastic bags, string, leather, rope, ribbon,seeds, shells, sticks, grass and plants are knitted, woven, knotted and braidedinto totems for a new age. Her craftsmanship transforms familiar debris intovivid textural objects that nurture and protect: woven cloaks, fishing nets andsheltering structures.

Asthe new face of progressive and modern Poland spreads outward from thesecenters the city fringes and outer urban areas await the redevelopment that hasbeen slow to arrive.

This work acts as a personal record of my time in the suburbs of Warsaw,Szczecin and Gdansk during the winter of 2011.

These photographs document the banal urban beauty found at the fringes ofPolish cities whilst also examining the subtle evidence of encroaching redevelopmentand urban renewal.

Catch You on the Flipside centers on a camera obscura looking out on the garden that surrounds c3, with two accompanying works considering the differing temporalities that structure photography. The logic of the work becomes apparent through the temporality of viewing and will come to a completion in an event coinciding with the Abbotsford Convent Discovery Day on Sunday 13^th November, 12-6pm. On the day, the public will be invited to have their photograph taken in the garden that forms the subject of the camera obscura. A total of 81 photographic portraits will be made on 35mm slide film, of which each participant will have a print sent out in exchange for their participation.

Kirsten has a background in Industrial Design, Fine Art, Gold & Silversmithing and Multimedia and likes to work in a variety of media. Concept development and the physical act of making are her favorite processes. Anthropomorphism and character design are a major part of the work she makes.

‘Small-scale production allows me to explore variations of similar concepts and allows me to group them into families to further explore their anthropomorphic qualities. My blog title ‘Repugnant Charm’ could sum up the nature of my work. I am interested in the balance between ugly and attractive. I play with bringing enough beauty to an ugly object or making a beautiful object a little bit ugly.

I became interested in the power and sentiment carried with jewelry and wished to continue this into larger objects. In 1999 I had cancer and became interested in the healing powers of meditation, spiritual totems and visualization techniques’.

Mancanza deals with the themes of human absence and presence and its traces. In this work I enquire into the ephemeral side of human existence. Questioning how we fix memory to arrest the inevitability of its change and erasure of time. I investigate how the visual can reignite the memory; through the use of photography printed on the translucent skin like materiality of acetate and the impermanence of tape.

Boltanski speaks of the photograph as leaving behind an image that is no longer there – human subject that is now absent.1 The elusive trace of human presence.

Sticks & Cones is an exploration of random and accidental mark making and an investigation of natural features within the line. Elements of nature such as tree branches, moving air or the surfaces of natural objects have been utilized to create marks forming the basis of images that depict fictitious scenes.

Whilst fictitious, the scenes are fragmented recordings of real life observations, memories or remnant feelings of natural elements in urban and non-urban environments.

November 13^th 12 - 6pm

When you get the chance to go somewhere no one else can go – somewhere strange, old and sacred – there’s a gentle rush in your chest, the thrill of exploring what’s going to be around the next corner. The concealed and abandoned rooms of the Convent elicit this effect.

The public has never been granted access to these spaces so, upon entering the rooms, one immediately conjures thoughts of the ghosts of young orphans or spectres in black and white habits floating down hallways.

Despite the sense of complete physical abandonment, the layers, stains and grime that remain on all surfaces of these buildings provide a wider narrative to the hidden world that once was. To find meaning in these rooms you have to look closely.

This project was commissioned by c3 as part of an ongoing documentation of the Abbotsford Convent site and will become part of an annually created collection of works.

SUKI AND THE PAPERFOLD

VANESSA VAN HOUTEN

SUKI and the paperfold explores the intricacies of the social influence of the artist’s immediate and extended family on her character by way of a series of single frame photographed tableaux vivants.

These ‘living pictures’ are directly contrasted with photographed objects from Van Houten’s past; these objects or ‘artefacts’ evoke a memory of a person from her family.

Born in California, raised in the Bahamas and Germany and now settled in Melbourne, Van Houten is a migrant who, consciously informed by her experiences, seeks to explore identity, displacement and how her story relates to other migrants and their communities. Her project is motivated by a deeply personal relationship to the subject matter of loss of cultural orientation, networks and the basic ability to communicate daily in your first language.

Sun in the sky, you know how I feel is all of the yellow drawings Tai has ever made. Previously un-exhibited, these works have all been made over the past 5 or so years, usually during breaks and in between other shows or projects. They are made when she is in a certain mood, seeming to come from a place that is private, quiet and almost meditative. They are drawings made for the pure joy of drawing. Throughout history, the colour yellow has been associated with many things; cowardice, caution, crime, friendship. In Tai’s world, yellow is a warm place where procrastinating, playing and wasting time is A-OK and she would love you to come visit.

A Decennalia was an ancient Roman festival that was celebrated each decade to mark another ten years under the Roman Empire.

It is ten years since September 11, 2001, and the images and memories of that day’s events continue to inform border protection, the movement of humans, war, international policy, aid, video games and disaster films. Is this the first decennalia of the Empire of 9/11?

9112011 : A Decennalia presents four artists’ responses to the events of September 11, 2001, and the ten years since those events first dominated television screens around the world. The exhibition questions the remembrance of that event over others, its place in history and its ongoing influence in our lives in four very different ways.

This exhibition was constructed backwards in the sense that the beautiful materiality of the artwork already existed as a non-art object, made by someone as an action of cleaning up waste material in an economical fashion.

By moving this material to the gallery context and then following the formal methodology of an art form like Ikebana, the work crystallises towards an increasingly mysterious outcome.

Friedrich’s art practice often uses informal research techniques (wikipedia/google) to develop counterfeit methodologies of creation.

Taking its name from the ancient latin word for jewellery, Jocale explores the process of play as a means of creation, as well as the the playful nature of jewellery itself.

Jocale has been traced back to the meaning ‘plaything’; taking this idea for inspiration, jewellery is used as a platform for five artists to express their ideas and to play with materials, concepts and the audience, by incorporating an element of fun; something moving, something hidden, or something colourful. Intuition and composition play major roles in the creative process when play is involved, enabling one to live in the moment and for ideas to flow naturally.

Postcard looks at the subject of perception and memory and the fundamental problems associated with depicting reality.

The image of a postcard is a quintessential image that allows the viewer to construct worlds beyond its flat surface. It is this flat surface that I have taken to exploring my perceptions and memories opening up into the themes of warmth, security, vulnerability and fear.

Flat images so often beg us to construct other worlds beyond their surfaces. I began enquiring into this when I found myself wandering obligatory images of the East coast of Britain, where I grew up and felt the best way to explore this was to crack open the bare bones of these images. I took the flat surface of the image and confronted my memories and perceptions.

THE LIKES OF YOU

The post can be defined as a regulated institution that ensures, in conditions established in advance, the transmission of the thought of the sender as he or she has transcribed it on a material support.

Becoming an open letter or postcard (as Derrida would say), the exhibition raises temporal and historical questions by interpreting and refiguring Brancusi’s The Gate of the Kiss in the here and now. That is, by shifting the work’s terms and meanings, this act of cultural translation looks at establishing the cultural context of the correspondence: to how places of separation enter into the field of representation, and by means of a literal illustration of Brancusi’s sculpture, to how history and historiography are spatialised in producing figures of difference and identity as a measure of public meaning and social fact.

Complete with interchangeable body parts, The Numan exists as a human-shaped vessel for textile, ceramic and electronic components, crafted in an electro-gothic style.

Designed by Rohani Osman (knitting and crochet), Brittany Veitch (felt and soft sculpture) and Katie Jacobs (ceramics), The Numan is an art exhibition that allows you to play God.

How we treat our most vulnerable members of society can be seen as a measure of society as a whole. Similarly, how you choose to use The Numan will illustrate complex questions about action and consequences, and about the inter-dependency of humanity.

The title of the project relates to both the contrasting emotions we all experience and to the nature of working within the constraints of negative film.

My current work practice involves marking and manipulating the film with bleach, ink, sand, needles and brushes, working in a manner, somewhat blind to how those marks will translate to the film as a positive image. This method exemplifies the concepts within the title.

Light Studies makes visible a working process that explores the connections between space and light, both physical and eternal. Each work is the result of a process involving meditative breath work and reflective practice. The works are constructed using either a lightly drafted or imagined grid. Within this framework, layers of transparent pigment are built up with intention, but without clear knowledge of how the combinations of colours will emerge. These works are part of an ongoing visual inquiry that commenced in 1998. This current series of paintings includes works that operate at the limits of the artist’s reflective practice and physical threshold.

I am examining the concept of collecting and recycling. I like to take an object out of it's original context and re-ascribe its function into an artwork. This then imbues it with a different meaning creating a new narrative and a non-utilitarian significance. This project references familiar everyday domestic objects with focus on a collection of discarded handmade coat hangers and tea cosies.

I aim to create an awareness and appreciation of past traditions and overlooked domestic histories where making things by hand was a necessity and a time consuming labour of love.

Fluctuating volume / iterative hand / interference vs. pearlescence / change of state

A desire line is a path created by the treading of many feet, usually describing the most direct route (shortcut) between two locations where established paths may be circuitous or inconvenient.

As we traverse and commute through our shared cultural environment, desire lines emerge. The artists in this show have followed collective lines as well as carving their own, accumulating objects, images and affects en-route for adaptive reuse. Make Do presents a collection of simple gestures constructed out of each artist's accumulations.

The works presented here bear the evidence of a variety of processes -transformative, repetitious, constructive, excessive- by which familiar content and materials are conflated or gently detourned.

While the spatial and wall works are invariably specific, each artist traces a unique threshold between signification and ineffability. The pieces are offered as they are: transparent, opaque, light, laboured, inflating, diffusing, sparkling, whirring, hanging, soaking, evaporating...

Grounded in a process based practice, l am interested in the dynamics of sculptural patterns and the architectural spaces they occupy.

This work is concerned with the complex nature of the ‘decorative motif’. Common place in home interiors, the motif is a subtle interplay of wilderness tamed and unity constructed.

A state of harmony references the act of creating a motif, the process of pattern making, the repetitious construction of shapes and assemblage to create a pattern that exists harmoniously with the space it inhabits.

Invested in this wallpaper design, is a physicality with the space it occupies, inviting one to touch.

KRISTEN PHILLIPS

Taking inspiration from the funeral art and reliquaries studied in a recent sabbatical to Italy, Phillips has transformed her own family heirlooms and those of her friends into memento mori.

The artist collages vanitas objects; skeletons, candles, detritus and timepieces, with personal mementos; travel souvenirs, jewelry, tools, buttons and thimbles.

This work is concerned with the journey of objects from ordinary to precious, when theybecome the relics of our dearly departed.

By recasting these objects into mysterious reliquary or shrines they provide a commentary about life (and death) and intergenerational bonds.

The works are displayed within day-glo pink shadow boxes and what-nots, emphasising the tactility of the waxy bronzes, tempting you to touch and serving as a reminder of playful recklessness and the need for us to all have a good time.

TAKINGS OF PLACE

Drawing much inspiration from the photography emanating from Germany during the 1970’s and 80’s, in particular from Düsseldorf’s infamous Kunstakademie, Clarke’s large scale photographs document the German and Scandinavian landscape.

Moreover, Clarke looks at occurrences within the landscape, that in today’s fast paced society can often be dismissed or not observed at all. Oddities and novelties of the everyday; a lonely van abandoned at the edge of a forest, beach chairs huddled together on the foreshore encompassed in fog, sheep happily grazing at the edge of a major city.

C.S Clarke’s use of large format photography in creating this body of work, a medium which impresses a very considered and formal approach on the photographer, complements his subject matter and is a process which enables the initial discovery of these Takings of Place.

I Hope You Choke is a photographic documentary of Tasmanian roadside produce stands and farm gate landscapes. It is a collection of photographs loaded with contradictions. A romanticised social commentary of a dying concept, despite the growing popularity and need for self-sustainable living.

These images are faithful and Australian. Even more so they are scenes unique to Tasmania, an offshore island to an offshore continent, regularly omitted from maps of Australia – a lonely a savagely beautiful place. Such isolation produces an ache of self-doubt, a suspicion of solipsism which has the tendancy to evoke an air of unease and underlying tension.

A play on the idea of artist residencies and the increasing fetishisation of artist's studios and homes as exemplars of interior design.

Like the Tableaux Vivants of the Expositions of the 19th century, where the indigenous people of various colonies of European Nations were displayed in reconstructions of their native environments, and made to perform appropriately authentic activities, Studio Apartment constructs a living and working space within c3's Gallery 2, a stylised representation of an artist's home and studio where visitors can see the artist at work, making art, filling out forms, making cups of tea, reading books or having a bit of a lie-down.

In an accelerated version of a studio residency, each day a different person occupies role of the artist; trying to make themselves at home and to work in an unfamiliar environment, bringing quite different modes of thinking and working to what may be quite an unsuitable environment, encountering traces of those who have come before them, and each dealing with the same set of restrictions but approaching them in different ways.

With the conflation of the gallery and the formal artist residency and their attendant bureaucracies Studio Apartment looks at the institutional aspects of art practice and the degree to which artists voluntarily institutionalise themselves. The project engages ideas of community in what is often be quite a solitary practice and in its parody of an artist's space explores the physical and economic realities of working as an artist.

This exhibition is proudly supported by Kappaya Japanese Soul Food, St Heliers Store + Gallery and Sally Romanes from the Abbotsford Convent Foundation.

The Bodhi tree, under which Buddha attained enlightenment, has infinite ability to shelter create and inspire.
Foard is acting as detective in the natural world as a tracker, fuzzy marsupial or lyre -bird looking for and piecing together clues, nourishment or scratching up a nesting mound.
These works are created as a result of many hours contemplating, walking, observing the ground, the trees, the discarded material and the secret characters and messages waiting there.
The intricate nature of the work reflects the hidden complexities of the natural world. The ground or surface often pieced together in collage, covering the threats or joys hidden underneath.
There is devotion and meditation added to the time spent exploring this world and lovingly re-creating new characters.

Reminiscent of laying awake at night and observing street light streaming through a crack in the blinds that bounces off a mirror, onto the wall and then floor. Awake, you trace the line of light back to the source through the objects that interfere with its passage.

Utilising a solid foundation in photography, with an interest in perspective and depth perception, I am directing my practice towards abstraction. Using one beam of light projected onto an orchestrated set of materials, a static image will become visible from one converging point. A second image softly reverberates the viewer and object on photographic paper, captured within the space.

Confused Histories is a painting show intended as an archive of the present but set in the future.

Images in the works are sourced from contemporary media. Collected ephemera such as found notes, bubble wrap and junk mail provide a base that documents contemporary attitudes rather than achievements.

The work is intended to act within a Gallery/Museum context as a tiny fraction of constructed history. This history has been deliberately tampered with referencing the mistrust, instability and confusion in contemporary society. The result is a chaotic platform from where the viewer must decipher what is real and what isn’t, what did or did not happen and what is a record of living or what has just been fabricated.

Talking about the present, using out-moded technology of the past such as painting and screenprinting is a process in which I can explore the personal as well as shared anxieties about how our physical and social environments have changed and how they will continue to change in the future.

From the early 1900s through to the 1970s, tent boxing was an integral part of the sideshow alley at agricultural shows that toured Australia. These owner-operated enterprises were fundamental to the period’s culture, providing both entertainment and insight into our nation’s racial discourse. According to oral testimony at least half of the fighters that manned the tents were Indigenous Australians, thus these troupes play a significant role in Indigenous history and twentieth century race relations.

In Everything Will be K.O., Griffiths explores the characters that took part in Tent Boxing and how their conflicting memories and contested interpretations mirror the problematic nature of our past.

My artwork, with its imagery taken from dreams and fairy tales, appears cute at first glance, but take a closer look. Those pretty girls may be vulnerable but they are in control of their own destinies.

Is Little Red Riding Hood really as innocent as she seems?

In these cautionary tales, I am questioning whether the really scary stuff is found on the outside of the playroom. My work often draws on subconscious fears, but the serenity seen in these portraits expressions indicate that the subjects have found strength from confronting their nightmares. With these works, there’s beauty here too – I am seeking inspiration from nature with flowers and sakura, the much loved cherry blossom my native Japan.

DEVIL’S WORKSHOP

My work explores entertainment as a form of escapism, and escapism as an industry. Public entertainment narratives chart the line between truth and fiction, fantasy and reality, public and private. They also induce real, and imagined, private fetishes of public figures. My paintings and supporting text constitute mise-en-scènes for entertainment industry narratives played out amid rumour, scandal and innuendo.

I am interested in the idea of rumours being manifestations of an audience’s desire. In generating rumours, the work exploits the fact that an audience’s participation in gossip is rarely dependant on authenticity. Like Schadenfreude, gossip reflects the pleasure people take in other people’s misfortunes, real or imagined.

Chosen narratives alternate between comedy and tragedy; reoccurring themes explore Eros and Thanatos, the desire for sex and the desire for death. The work looks at how these desires are experienced vicariously by audiences and the non-passive ways narratives are consumed.

Like gossip, the entertainment narratives are contrived, improvised and distorted. The painting process can change a story as it goes along. Reflecting the gaze of an imagined audience, the paintings cater to nefarious desire. The work seeks to engage these same audiences, (the viewer), in a complex form of homage.

Object-Appendage pictures a hedonistic overlap between flesh and smouldering plasticity. The points of connect between the organic and the inorganic, fractured and fetishised, present a space in which pleasure and peril are felt simultaneously. For those of us who secretly relish a smack of petroleum at the bowser, or the acrid scent of a freshly bleached floor, there is a quality to the noxious that is both ambiguous and beckoning. Object-Appendage explores the seductive nature of the artificial, and the tenuous couplings which make us question the existence of pleasure without its grim other.

Sarah Berners is a Melbourne based artist whose practice encompasses sculpture, photography and painting. She has exhibited extensively throughout Melbourne’s artist run spaces and commercial galleries including Seventh, Kings A.R.I, Bus, Lindberg, and Anna Pappas Galleries and is currently a sessional lecturer in Sculpture & Spatial Practices at The Victorian College of the Arts.

SPIRIT IS A BONE

KIRRA JAMISON

For her exhibition at c3, Kirra Jamison has created a large-scale site-specific painting.

Drawing upon dark mythologies and childhood fairy tales Jamison paints surreal worlds that are haunting and whimsical. Set in the natural world these paintings depict deliberately ambiguous narratives that straddle the worlds of reality and imagination. The artist employs a palette that ranges from the subdued and muted to the kaleidoscopic and employs a wide range of techniques that move freely from loose and spontaneous mark making to meticulously executed finer details.

Jamison was a recipient of the Anne and Gordon Samstag International Visual Arts Scholarship (2007). She exhibits regularly in solo and group exhibitions and her work is help in private and corporate collections including that of Art Bank, Macquarie Bank, KPMG and the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery. She is represent by Sophie Gannon, Melbourne and Jan Murphy Gallery, Brisbane.

STRANGERS TO OURSELVES

NINA ROSS

We carry our own culture with us wherever we go. There can be a struggle between one's old & new culture and finding a sense of belonging between the two.

In Strangers to Ourselves the artist draws on personal experiences of living in Norway as an outsider (Australian) and finding her place within this unfamiliar culture.

Using traditional Norwegian dress called a bunad, Nina explores through bodily expression, her efforts of trying to understand her relationship to Norway (married to a Norwegian) and feeling stuck between two countries.

Loved, feared, celebrated and even hated, owls have a long running history in many cultures throughout the world.

They have been seen as markers of gods, symbols of knowledge, wisdom, fertility, as well as death, famine and destruction. There are few creatures that have been perceived with such contradictory meanings.

Darren Henderson's anthropomorphic birds are distinctly individual, each expressing the infinite shades and subtle conveyance of different emotions. Fight or Flightis a celebration of the unexpected and unplanned. Drawing inspiration from both the subtle simplicities and complexities of life.

A founding member of The Autopsy Gallery in Melbourne, Darren has exhibited in a number of group exhibitions and has been featured in several publications including Wooden Toy, Juxtapoz (USA) and Sunday Life (The Herald-Sun and The Sunday Age).

FORGETTING TO SLEEP

The works in this exhibition attempt to explore the concept of apathy and inaction being manifestations of guilt and anxiety experienced in response to knowledge of environmental issues.
